“The thing which marks theatre out from many other art forms is its communal nature. It is impossible to do theatre on your own. Even a 'one man show' needs someone else in the audience. What theatres do is create communities.”
Lee Hall, writer

When Live Theatre was founded in 1973 it was to create plays with a strong regional identity for North East audiences and, in particular, for people who didn’t usually go to the theatre. Over 35 years later, the company has a fantastic, well equipped theatre in which to perform its plays, but the mission to create work which is challenging, popular and relevant to all, remains as important as ever.

The company is now recognised as one of the country’s leading new writing theatres and has gained a fantastic reputation for the way it finds, nurtures and develops regional talent.

Engagement with young people is a central activity both at the theatre and out in the community and we are proud that all activities we run, including our highly acclaimed youth theatre, are free to those who take part.

If you share our passion for performance or simply want to help make a difference please consider supporting Live Theatre. Here's why some of our current friends have chosen to support us:

"We're delighted to work with Live Theatre - they have a fantastic tradition of encouraging and developing the considerable talent we have within our communities in the North East, and are leading the way in driving that talent forward, to a national stage and beyond."
John Clough, Chief Executive of eaga

"We love the venue, the intimate and relaxed atmosphere; both clients and friends all agree it is a cracking night out."
John Conway, Marketing Director of Potts

"We're proud to be supporting a theatre which is doing so much to enrich and deliver new illustrative writing to the UK stage"
Sarah Deaves, Chief Executive of Coutts & Co.
